Do You Smell Like A Monkey?
Ok - it started off as a joke. The idea came up when I was doing a parody of a famous name brand soap enacted by people with Irish accents. I just said "Sometimes a man likes to smell like a monkey." It developed a life of it's own from there. We came up with a bunch of monkey named soaps, and dreamed up all kinds of crazy radio and television advertisements that could someday be aired. Whenever we told anyone about the idea, they would always laugh. I like to hear people laugh. One thing led to another, and the occasional little batch of soap turned into larger and larger batches. People would buy the soap first because it was funny and would make a funny gift for a husband, boyfriend, brother, friend. They would buy the soap again because it was a good product, molded into big man-sized bars that smelled good and worked great.
One of our first soaps was going to be Hot Dang Orangutan. We were planning on using Palm Oil because it is naturally orange and was a perfect ingredient for this soap. Soapmakers, and lots of other industries use a lot of Palm Oil. However, it didn't take much research to discover that Palm Oil plantations are the single biggest threat to the dwindling natural habitat of the wild Orangutan. While we are a small company, and our actions have very little impact on global issues, there was no way we could name a soap Hot Dang Orangutan and use Palm Oil, which would hasten the destruction of this poor creature's only home on this planet. So we found another way to make the soap orange and we don't use Palm Oil in any of our soaps. As we went further into it, we have discovered that most of the Great Apes are under great pressure from poachers, and shrinking habitat. The Gorilla, the Chimpanzee, the Bobono and the Orangutan are all in great danger and are struggling to survive. We are their closest relative and we get a lot of enjoyment out of primates of all types - once you start watching for monkeys and apes in television commercials you will realize how important they are to us culturally. Apes and monkeys have also given a lot to science and medicine, and not willingly. I think we owe them a little better than we have given. So, even though it is a small thing, we donate 5% of our profits to non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving the habitat of endangered primates. We hope you can have some fun, do some good and above all you big ape, wash the stink off before you go out in public again.
